Cut out the template, and if you are planning to use the optional setting that will

be offered at the end of the year, be sure and make these blocks in red/white.

Block 23

Cut all of the fabric you will need to make the block.

1

Align the first triangle with one egde of the octogon.

It will be easiest to start with one of the longer edges.

2

Place the pieces right sides together, and the point should extend 1/4" beyond the octogon.

3

Starting at the point, sew these 2 pieces together about

1/2 way down the length of the octogon's edge.

4

Open and press.

5

Lay your next triangle in place.

6

Pin the pieces together and sew the entire seam.

7

Open and press. The partial seam should still be

loose, but the rest will be sewn down.

8

Add the next triangle.

9

And sew the entire seam, as before.

10

Open and press.

11

Continue around the octogon, adding trianlges and sewing entire seams.

12

Turn the piece over. Because the block you are working on is small,

it is a good idea to clip the seam allownace near the point were the 2 seams

intersect. This will make it easier to get in there and finish the seam.

13

14

Pin the triangle in place.

15

Sew that final length of seam, starting at the point and working

back to the partial seam you made in the beginning.

16

Open and press.

Position the background triangles as shown to make the block square.

17

Sew them all in place. Open and press.

18

Block 24

This block will be constructed in the same fashion as Block 23, but several units

need to be sewn together before you start working your way around the octogon.

Cut out all of the pieces you will need.

1

Sew pieces B and D together. Make sure all pieces are sewn

together the SAME way (with D on the right).

2

Open and press. Set aside.

3

Sew pieces C and E together. Make sure all pieces are sewn

together the SAME way (with E on the right).

4

Open and press. Set aside.

5

Position a B/D unit along the SHORT side of the octogon.

6

7

Sew the partial seam, as before.

8

Open and press.

Add a C/E unit.

9

10

Sew the entire seam. Open and press.

11

Add a B/D unit.

12

Sew the full seam.

13

Work your way all the way around the octogon as before.

14

Flip the piece over and clip the seam allownace as before.

Pin the piece in place and sew the remainder of the seam.

15

Open and press.
